Workplace Death

Every worker has the right to a safe workplace. Clearly then, corporations who are negligent in not providing workers with an environment free from injury or death should face serious sanctions under the law.

One preventable death or serious injury at work is simply one too many.

Injury and death that is caused in the workplace shames us all and it is disgraceful that successive governments have placed the interests of negligent business owners firmly ahead of the interests of injured workers and their families on this issue. My Bill reverses this arrangement as in cases where criminal negligence is established that is found to cause the death or serious injury of an employee, my Bill provides for:

  • Imprisonment of up to 25 Years for Executives of Corporations that are found to be responsible for the death of an employee.

  • Imprisonment for up to 10 Years for Executives of Corporations that are found to be responsible for the serious injury of an employee.

  • Fines of up to $5 Million for Executives of Corporations that are found to be responsible for the death or serious injury of an employee.

  • Fines of up to $50 Million for Corporations that are found to be responsible for the death or serious injury of an employee.

As well, my Bill provides the judiciary with a large number of sentencing options such as banning an individual from being a company director, in addition to community service obligations and repatriations.
