Wilton International Airport? - No Way!

All Wollongong suburbs would be adversely affected by a major airport 25 kilometres away at Wilton. Aircraft would have to come in low over the city, and the escarpment would magnify the noise.

Wilton is in the Sydney air drainage basin and a major airport would worsen the poor air quality which already impacts on Illawarra residents; and it’s also close to major Sydney and Wollongong water catchments which could well be adversely affected if a major airport was established in the vicinity.

A five person ALP committee chaired by opposition leader MarkLatham will make a decision on Labor’s preferred site in the next two weeks.

Tell him we don’t want an international airport at Wilton. Wollondilly residents and their council oppose it, and the people of the Illawarra certainly don’t want Sydney’s airport noise problems dumped on them.

The Greens Position ...

The Greens NSW:

  • Oppose a new "second" airport, including Badgery's Creek, within the Sydney basin air shed in accordance with the 1991 NSW Government Summit on Air Quality and the September 1995 statement of the Australian Medical Association;

  • Believe that the community groups active in fighting airport expansion should be able to nominate delegates to directly represent them on liaison bodies;

  • Believe that information on the current situation, expansion plans, environmental analysis and forecasts must be more freely available and will ensure that there is transparency and accountability in all decision-making
